Chicago Ideas Week

Chicago Ideas Week might have finished on October 16th, but for some of the digital photography students at Harrington it has just begun to wrap up. Having shot hundreds of photos throughout the seven day event. Some of the students have spent long days and nights editing and sorting through all the images images. A student named Zak Jokela created a time lapse video of a set being erected at the Oriental Theater on the first day of Chicago Ideas Week.

Practicing what I preach.

While Looking through Dirk Fletcher's Blog I noticed he had a great post that most of us can learn from. So i asked him if I could borrow it to share with the rest of you.

"I just got an email from a friend, photographer and ASMP board member that my ASMP article looks great.  I haven’t seen it yet (check back, I’ll post it here) but I have a funny story that I wanted to share.  When ASMP/PDEedu editor extraordinaire, Jill Waterman contacted me, I quickly forwarded the chapter from Lighting for Dummies that she wanted to feature (ch 8) and the pictures that I could access quickly. 

You have to know the images for the book live in several places with the largest file being a whopping 2400 images!

 I couldn’t locate one particular shot.  Then I realized the irony, the AWOL image was the example of the ‘quick one-light wine glass technique' where you can light any clear or lightly frosted glass by simply illuminating the wall behind it. 

 

Of course it really only works with clear liquids (cranberry juice standing in for Pinot Noir in this case) but in less then 21 minutes, including finding a camera, a CF card, a ceramic tile, dragging stands and lights from the one of our studios to a lounge with a relativity clean wall, I shot the lead picture of the article.  A true testament to what’s inside! "

2nd Showing of Montgomery

Incase you were not available to see the first screening of Montgomery. you have a second chance to view it alongside your fellow classmates. The movie will be played October 27th a second movie will be played after montgomery.





Plot Outline
Officers Jack Pappas and Horton Fullbring were the best on the force. Their undercover work has brought down some of the biggest drug dealers in the city. Their next set up was like any other; they though the plan was perfect... But in a matter of seconds everything goes wrong, drug dealer Tony escapes, the bags of money and drugs disappear, and the only clue the officers have is a kid they find at the scene of the crime. They think they’ve caught their man. However, they soon discover Tyler Montgomery won't be as easy to interrogate as they thought...

How will the officers deal with finding the truth when their only lead is really 5 people? Tyler Montgomery suffers from dissociative identity disorder; at any time he can be the aggressive Angela, the sophisticated Eugene, the playful Cameron, or the nervous Sam. Jack and Horton will have to interrogate each of these personalities until they find the truth. But with five people in one, the truth wont be easy to uncover.

Film Contest Winners

Incase you have not heard the winners of Harrington's first annual film contest coming in first place Julio Perez, in 2nd place Dave Moorehead and in third place Zak Jokela. For all who participated thank you and keep shooting.

Filter Photo Festival 2011

     Carlos Javier Ortiz Kicked off the filter Photo Festival 2011, here at Harrington College of Design by showing us a few of his many works in progress. Some of these projects he shared with the audience  included his work on Migrant workers, which allowed the viewer a first hand account on the living and working conditions of illegal immigrants working to pick the fresh produce we take for granted. Another project was his documentation of the protesters of Occupy Wall Street and Chicago. Finally he also shared his project, Too Young To Die, which is about young Chicagoans killed by gun fire his documentation does not stop after one day, he continues to document the long road ahead that families face after losing a loved one. 

     After Carlos Javier Ortiz finished describing his work there was a panel called, Using Photography For Social Change. The panel consisted of Kevin Miyazaki, Jason Reblando, Liz Chilsen & Krista Wortendyke. They spoke about their work on based on the documentation of the Chicago Housing Authority, The Violence in Chicago, and the Demolition of housing projects such as Cabrini Green.

Chicago Ideas Week Is Upon Us

Message to DP Students From Dirk Fletcher:


Over the summer I advertised a unique opportunity to be involved in a class that would spend a week photographing Chicago’s first Chicago Ideas Week (http://www.chicagoideas.com/about)
a weeklong event that will bring the world’s top speakers together with Chicago’s best thinkers to create an ecosystem of innovation, exploration, and intellectual recreation.  An entire week of content that is similar in nature to the TED talks which Harrington students will also be photographing at the end of this week.

Also, please be patient with the cage this week as we have absolutely ransacked it in order to issue each photographer in the class with a matching set of gear for the portraits we will be doing of each speaker.  You will especially notice a shortage of pocket wizards and high end lenses.
